It’s always a pleasure to watch the movie. The cinematography is breathtaking; I can't say enough about the emotions evoked by the visual excellence of this film. The soundtrack is also absolutely beautiful; the haunting melody of "Winter Light" graced many of the outdoor scenes. And the story itself is just heart-warming and inspiring!
A lot of people regard The Secret Garden as a family movie. Indeed, the story is simple enough for children to understand, yet complex enough to interest the grownups. The title of The Secret Garden can evoke so many assumptions and imagination. It is sweet since it’s full of lovely flowers, plants and trees. At the same time, the secret garden is wearing a mask because of the word:”secret.”
The Secret Garden is a story about love, hope, letting go and forgiveness. It unfolds the secret of a family tragedy and the process of their recovery from the past: A young spoiled English girl, orphaned in India, who comes home to live on her uncle, Lord Craven's gloomy and dismal estate in the early 1900's. The girl, Mary, finds herself trapped in a mysterious, colossal manor managed by Mrs. Medlock, a seemingly uncharitable housekeeper. Being so intelligent, independent and sly, Mary reconnoiters the manor and learn its forbidding secrets easily. She soon figures that her aunt died in childbirth ten years ago, but her son, Colin, still lives there, although sickly confined to a bed, and unable to walk. Unfortunately, Lord Craven never recovers from this heartbreak, which explains his frequent absences.
The high walls of the secret garden were covered with the leafless stems of roses which were so thick, that they matted together. This is a metaphor of the closure of Lord Craven’s heart, which is a dramatically shame. And what saddens my heart the most is the fact that inside the cold walls, there is such a wondrously gorgeous garden! It seems to whisper that just look inside, and you’ll discover a natural cure; just hang on tight for one more second, and it will all be fine; just keep being brave for a little longer, and we shall overcome….
Yet this is the lesson that Lord Craven spends his whole life to learn. Without his wife, he can never talk and act normally again. He refuses the invitation from world to welcome him back to happiness. He is meant to be lonely, and despair for the rest of his life. Luckily, with Mary being part of the family, Colin is encouraged and is immersed in joy.
Without pain, how can we cherish joy? The Secret Garden is doubtlessly a stunning and healing movie. How I wish I had my own secret garden inside a stone wall!
