Because of Winn-Dixie is about a young girl, abandoned by her mother, and moving to a town in Florida with her father. After meeting a stray dog in the supermarket, Opal takes it under her wing and makes it her pet, naming it Winn-Dixie. Along with Winn-Dixie, she makes friends with the residents of the town, slowly healing a hole in her heart from the loss of her mother and making amends with her distant father.
This movie is touching and heartwarming. It shows the difficulties of dealing with major changes in a child’s life, such as abandonment. In the movie, Opal remembers nothing about her mother, and she is afraid to ask her father for information. Winn-Dixie offers a place for her to confide in and prods her to talk to her father. However, her father is reluctant about answering, and this leads Opal to think that her father was the one who abandoned her mother. This thought also makes Opal believe that others, such as Winn-Dixie, can abandon her at any time. This element is especially strong when Winn-Dixie runs away. Later, her father talks with her, discussing the past about her mother, and eventually they make amends. With this, the topic of abandonment is lifted from the plotline. I am touched by this part and it makes me extremely proud and grateful of the closeness between my family and I. Other messages are stated through different character arcs and gradually explained over the rest of the movie.
The actress of Opal, AnnaSophia Robb, usually acts in short movies that aren’t played in the theaters such as Bridge to Terabithia and American Girl: Samantha, so I think that her acting in this movie is a large improvement for her. In both of the former movies, she played characters that had completely different personalities than in Because of Winn-Dixie, such as roles of dignified people, so this is the first time I’ve seen her portray a person who has no need to restrain herself from speaking without thinking, and I think it’s a wonderful breakthrough. The way she shows her feelings through her facial expressions is absolutely amazing. Besides the change in characteristics, I enjoy watching her different interactions with the other characters in the movie, especially the dog. She clearly showed her different emotions in each character arc, and I’m amazed by how adept she is in acting out the contrast of various emotions to the audience. I’d say she really made the Opal from the script come to life with her acting!
I am very impressed with this entire movie for its sensitive treatment of family connections, and AnnaSophia Robb’s breakthrough acting skills, perfectly portraying the complicated feelings of Opal. Overall, it’s a educational and entertaining movie for people of all ages to enjoy and learn about the importance of family bonds.
