The movie Life of Pi was directed by our honorable Taiwanese Ang Lee, who accomplished his first 3D movie Life of Pi in Taiwan. The success of this movie also glorifies Taiwan’s film-shooting teams as well as Taiwan’s scenic beauty. It is reported that about 70% of the scenes in Life of Pi was shot in Taiwan. Some of the best known places include the Taipei Zoo, the white sand beaches in Kenting, and the white Banyan Park in Pingtung. When the film was released in Taiwan, it claimed the box office champion for three weeks in a roll. I think the reason why the movie drew such a large audience is partly because we Taiwanese feel proud of Director Ang Lee, and partly because Life of Pi also introduces the soft power of Taiwan to people around the world. Without Ang Lee, we ourselves may not realize that Taiwan can actually support such a high-class movie shooting by using the old Shueinan Studios in Taichung Airport. Besides the great achievement behind the scenes, the plot of the movie is amazing itself. In Pi’s story-telling and Ang Lee’s unique aesthetic interpretation, I found that the nature can be very cruel aside from its beauty. Pi had to live in hunger and in panic only to survive. In such desperate situation, some people may choose to hurt others, just like some villains in our real life would kill or steal to make themselves rich or to survive. In the beginning, Pi was very afraid of the tiger Richard Parker, but he gradually overcame his fear and learned to live independently and harmoniously with Richard Parker. After he knew how to get along with the Tiger, the calm weather and still boat at this moment seemed to reflect his inner mood. In this part of the movie, it is like when we face some cruel social rules and unjust events (the Tiger), we still can embrace our inner courage so that we won’t succumb to the fear of being losers in life. After all, when we are facing the threat of death, neither fame nor wealth can help us out. When we face real crisis, we can only pluck up the courage to live on so that we can get through the difficulties in life like Pi. If there were no animals in Pi’s story, I think there will neither be highlights. I think the cruelty of nature and a sense of guilt of living alone will finally erase Pi’s will to live on and kill Pi. Pi’s story is like a miracle out of logic, but the process of how he seeks survival, overcomes fear, faces desperation, and appreciates the beauty of nature and the wonders of God has made this movie worth watching.
